Thursday night, with about fifty other people, I ran up and down one of the hardest hills in the city for a half hour. The route is steep, nearly 25% in some places, less in others and about 4/10 of a mile one-way. To give you an idea, the house with the pointed roof is three stories tall. The right side as you face up the hill tends to gather more leaf litter and is therefore more nerve wracking on the way down so I try to get in early enough to run on the left.
This was my first one of the season. Usually I chip away, two and a half laps at a time--half laps count and they carry over from event to event and from season to season--and manage to do three laps later in the season after I get my hill legs back. Somehow I did three full laps with a minute and change to spare right out of the gate this time. I'll be interested to see how I do next time. You get things at five, ten, sixteen, thirty-five, and fifty full laps. Sadly, I ended last season at sixteen and I've already missed two this year so I won't hit thirty-five but next year.
