I was part of GoRuck Challenge class 662 on Friday night/Saturday morning. I’m sore in places I don’t think I’ve ever been sore, I still have sand on my scalp after four showers, it took three wash cycles to get my gear to stop smelling like the bay, and I'm still processing everything. But, you know what? I had a blast.

On a glib note: apparently my nail salon’s base and top coats are some sort of military-grade epoxy or automotive paint or something. That pedicure was two weeks old when I went to the challenge.

For context, you should know that in just over 48 hours I will be starting one of these. If you can't be arsed to follow the link imagine a mud run, but a team event instead of a race, 10+ hours and 15+ miles long, plus calisthenics and problem solving, run by former special forces guys, all done with a backpack full of bricks and whatever other awkward, heavy things they ask your team to carry. For the last few months I've been walking around with a backpack full of bricks.

Her: Is it wrong that I sort of wish someone would try to steal that bag? Like on the bus or something?

Me, laughing:  No. Not at all.

Thursday night, with about fifty other people, I ran up and down one of the hardest hills in the city for a half hour. The route is steep, nearly 25% in some places, less in others and about 4/10 of a mile one-way. To give you an idea, the house with the pointed roof is three stories tall. The right side as you face up the hill tends to gather more leaf litter and is therefore more nerve wracking on the way down so I try to get in early enough to run on the left.

This was my first one of the season. Usually I chip away, two and a half laps at a time--half laps count and they carry over from event to event and from season to season--and manage to do three laps later in the season after I get my hill legs back. Somehow I did three full laps with a minute and change to spare right out of the gate this time. I'll be interested to see how I do next time. You get things at five, ten, sixteen, thirty-five, and fifty full laps. Sadly, I ended last season at sixteen and I've already missed two this year so I won't hit thirty-five but next year.
