Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Right. So who’s never had Jim Beam? Turns out: me.

It was lot tastier than I expected. It’s a bourbon. It tastes like a bourbon. Corn and oak and sort of generally sweet but not cloying or syrupy. A little bitterness in the aftertaste but not so much that it becomes unenjoyable.

George Dickel Tennessee Sour Mash Whisky, 12-year

Good, smooth, nothing I didn’t like about it, nothing I found particularly amazing. Almost invisible beside the rye.

George Dickel Tennessee Rye

Big, big, BIG spicy nose on this one. The taste doesn’t quite live up to the nose but it lacks the aftertaste I dislike in rye so I like it quite a bit more than I do other ryes.

Van Winkle Special Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Lot “B”, 12-year

Very nice. It wasn’t the revelatory experience I had with the 15 y/o Pappy but I might even like it better. I think I’ll have to try them side by side to be sure. It has a sort of crisp, fruity nose, like apple, morphing quickly into different versions of caramel after the addition of ice and a malty background that’s really very pleasant. It’s so, so good.

Old Rip Van Winkle Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 10-year

The least smooth of the Van Winkles I’ve tried. Still quite good but where the others were amazing no matter what, I found this one really good only after the addition of ice.
