Cyrus Noble and two Willetts

Cyrus Noble Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey
Two in a row*. Oof. This is just as (if not more) sweet and syrupy than the Four Roses Single Barrel. It’s a variant of sweet that doesn’t appeal to me at all. I actually couldn’t drink it. But. If your palate is more suited to Angel’s Envy and Four Roses, give it a try. Might be just the thing.
Willett Straight Rye Whiskey, 4-year
Yup. I even like their rye.

Willett Pot Still Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Well then. Turns out I won’t drink anything Willett puts out like I thought. I’d been so overwhelmingly pleased with everything else I tried that when I was presented with a giftcard to one of my local liquor stores, I just blithely grabbed a bottle of this thinking that of course I’d like it. I… don’t. I get a weird, flat aftertaste that just didn’t do it for me. Not neat. Not with ice. Not with water. Maybe as a mixer but I haven’t tried that yet. Rye drinkers who shun bourbon might find this a little more to their liking. I’ll be taking it to an event** and sharing it so it doesn’t gather dust in my house.
After the initial draft of this, I talked about it with my barkeep. She suggested that I let it open up in the bottle a little and try it again. I’m still taking the bottle to the event** but I’m also putting a bit of it aside and will revisit it later after it’s taken a few deep breaths.
* I posted it out of order but I tried this right after the Four Roses Single Barrel. After the initial draft of this, I talked about it with my barkeep. ** The event was canceled but I'll still probably take it to a different one.
