I could start with the story of the sunglasses. I fell in love with this line of frames, with film imbedded in the arms, when they first came out but even the smallest ones were too big for what I was accustomed to wearing for my regular glasses. With my current prescription sunglasses five years out of date, it finally occurred to me that new suns could be my route to the frames I fell in love with.

That’s an excellent, specific story to go with this picture.

I could talk about how I used to live just a few blocks from where I took this and how I spent as much of today as possible barefoot and how every time I'm at the water, I wonder why I moved or think about moving back. Never mind that I had many excellent reasons to move to where I am now and continue to have many excellent reasons to stay.

That would also be an excellent story to go with this picture.

Or I could just point out the cliff and ocean behind me, the goofy pin on my lapel, the strap of my near-omnipresent messenger bag, the warm sweater with the broken zipper, the occasionally-tamed hair, the smile lines, and the imminent sunburn. No story, per se, just broad strokes.

It’s a good, general, start for this project.

This is day one, week one. Today is my birthday.

This is 52 at 40.
